电子天平是采用电磁力平衡的原理，应用现代电子技术设计而成的。它是将称盘与通电线圈相连接，置于磁场中，当被称物置于称盘后，因重力向下，线圈上就会产生一个电磁力，与重力大小相等方向相反。这时传感器输出电信号，经整流放大，改变线圈上的电流，直至线圈回位，其电流强度与被称物体的重力成正比。而这个重力正是物质的质量所产生的，由此产生的电信号通过模拟系统后，将被称物品的质量显示出来。
     由于电子天平是利用电磁力平衡的原理，没有机械天平的横梁，没有升降枢装置，全量程不用砝码，直接在显示屏上读数，所以具有操作简单，性能稳定，称量速度快，灵敏度高等特点。目前一般电子天平还具有去皮（净重）称量、累加称量、计件称量等功能。并配有对外接口。可连接打印机、计算机、记录仪等，实现了称量、记录、计算自动化。
