少数种在营养菌丝表面覆极薄的一层气生菌丝枝—子实体或孢子丝。孢子丝直形、个别种呈钩状或螺旋，具横隔膜。以横隔分裂形成孢子，孢子杆状、柱形两端截平或椭圆形等。菌落外貌与结构多样，一般比链霉菌菌落小，表面崎岖多皱，致密干燥，一触即碎，或者为面团；有的种菌落平滑或凸起，无光或发亮呈水浸状。此属多为好气性腐生菌，少数为厌气性寄生菌。能同化各种碳水化合物，有的能利用碳氢化合物、纤维素等。诺卡氏菌主要分布于土壤。现已报导100余种，能产生30多种抗生素。如对结核分枝杆菌和麻疯分枝菌有放线菌放线菌*的利福霉素，对引起植物白叶枯病的细菌，以及原虫、病毒有作用的间型霉素，对革兰氏阳性细菌有作用的瑞斯托菌素等。另外，有此诺卡氏菌用于石油脱蜡、烃类发酵以及污水处理中分解腈类化合物。放线菌属放线菌属(Actinomyces)放线菌属多为致病菌，只有营养菌丝，直径小于1微米，有横隔，可断裂成"V"形或"Y"形体。无气生菌丝，也不形成孢。一般为厌气菌或兼性厌气菌。
