β-淀粉样蛋白(amyloid β-protein ，Aβ)由邮淀粉样前体蛋白(β-amyloid precursor protein,APP)水解而来，由细胞分泌，在细胞基质沉淀聚积后具有很强的神经毒性作用。在病理条件下，AD患者脑内β淀粉样蛋白（Aβ）的产生是正常情况下的4～10倍，大量的Aβ聚积形成的神经炎性斑（老年斑），老年斑的形成导致海马内大量细胞的死亡。
阿尔茨海默症（Alzhemer's disease,AD）是一种以进行性认知功能减退抱愧记忆障碍和痴呆为特征的神经变性疾病，主要的病理热证包括神经细胞外以β-淀粉样蛋白（Aβ）沉积为核心形成的老年斑（SP），细胞内以超磷酸化的Tau蛋白为核心形成的神经纤维缠结（NFT）及神经细胞突触的丢失和脑wei缩。Aβ是一种生理性多肽物质，在脑中不断生成和讲解、清楚。AD发病机制中最主要的理论是淀粉样肽瀑布假说，即脑内Aβ产生和消除的不平衡导致疾病发生，最终导致神经元退行性变而引起痴呆。
