M1 macrophages secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and present antigens on a full-time basis, participate in a positive immune response, and exert immune surveillance functions; M2 macrophages have only weak antigen presentation capabilities, and By secreting the suppressive cytokines IL-10 and/or TGF-B, etc. down-regulate the immune response, it plays an important role in immune regulation. Identification of the type of macrophages by phenotype has important implications for studying the functions of macrophages under different physiological and pathological conditions.
However, there are still no recognized phenotypic markers to identify and distinguish different types of macrophages. The phenotypic characteristics of M1 and M2 macrophages are still inconclusive. Specific immunity, also known as acquired immunity or adaptive immunity, is specific to one pathogen.
