To determine effectors of cell signaling pathways in the context of intact functioning cells, cell-based reporter assays are an ideal option. Using luciferase reporters downstream of a pathway-specific promoter response element, signaling activity can be conveniently measured by the output of luciferase activity. The system can be applied across a wide variety of cell types and signaling pathways and allows for high throughput screening of large libraries of compounds for inhibitory or activating function. Alternatively, fluorescent proteins such as eGFP and RFP can be used to visualize live cellular readouts.
